We’re excited to share our latest project—working on a beautiful 1973 Super Beetle Convertible. Here’s what we have planned for this classic:
Over the years, I’ve worked with many vendors, but I’ve yet to find a headliner that fits as well as the original factory version. That’s why we make our own, using a pattern based on an authentic Volkswagen headliner I had the chance to install years ago when I worked with the factory part. Their technique ensures a tight, smooth finish, and we’ve carried that knowledge forward to every Beetle we work on.
We usually make our own pad sets and envelopes, but for this project, the customer already ordered one. We’ll see how it fits and give you a report once we’ve tested it out.
As for the top, we rely on a trusted supplier we’ve worked with for over 40 years. During COVID, we tried a different vendor—it didn’t work out. So, we waited it out, and we’re back to using our tried-and-true source to guarantee a proper fit and finish.
I come from the old school of auto trimming, where you had to know how to cut, sew, and handle any upholstery project that came through the shop. Back then, “Auto Trimmer” wasn’t just a job—it was a title earned by journey-level upholsterers with the skill and experience to tackle anything.
Maybe my next blog will dive deeper into what being an Auto Trimmer was all about.
Warm regards,
Paul
